Online Video Platform Test Drive – Ooyala Backlot
I figure since I have already reviewed Brightcove in my previous post (which is now officially lame compared to this post – I think I will rewrite it), the logical thing to do is keep going and begin a ground for comparison, starting with the next Online Video Platform on my list – Ooyala’s Backlot Enterprise version. For starters, they have a cute (yes, I just used the word cute) and catchy 60 second introductory video on www.Ooyala.com that neatly wraps reasons to embrace online video and their services. It reminds me a little of Google’s 2009 “Parisian Love” Superbowl commercial, and definitely gets me in the mood to do everything with video. Anyway, getting past the brilliant pitch (sources for the predicted growth in video and mobile apparently come from eMarketer and Forrester Research) you can sign up for a free trial. Like Brightcove, you can signup for a try-before-you-buy period (for how long is unclear at the sign-up page, but it is a 30 day trial) that will give you access to manage and publish video from your desktop and upload video from your mobile device. Unfortunately, like Brightcove, mobile viewing is not enabled as part of the trial.

NY Video Meetup – March 31st
Earlier this week I attended the NY Video Meetup group, which was an excellent break from the monotony of work, home, gym, etc. Why not shake things up? The event was sponsored-in-part and hosted by AOL headquarters (770 Broadway (and 9th St), New York, NY 10003).

I must say when I got to the 6th floor lobby I felt homesick. My first company after college was very-much like AOL’s furnishings. It had a start-up feel to it, where everything was white, and glossy, and lots of bright colors. The $10 admission paid for the beer and pizza, which also reminded me of the old days – perhaps again some day. The people present were very cool and laid back; most seemed to be artists, musicians, or small business owners – it was a nice break from working within a large company as mine and getting to know some new people with new ideas. There were in total, according to the Meetup site, about 140 people.

Why I Prefer Netflix Over Amazon Prime; Apple Doesn’t Deserve My Attention Yet
I love Amazon and use them for the purchase of nearly all of my consumer products. When it comes to streaming video though, I rarely look to them. Netflix is my true love for streaming movies, hands down. My Apple use mainly consists of movie trailers, but thats about it – explanation to follow. When I sat down for 10 minutes and scribbled down the hours of viewing per month, the break down came to something like this:
